Obituary of Sheriff Edwin Englehardt
Sheriff Edwin Englehardt, lifelong resident of Paterson, NJ, died peacefully on Thursday April 13, 2023. He was born on September 29, 1929, to John and Anna (Beckert) Englehardt. He graduated in 1948 from St. John's Catholic High School.
He is predeceased by his mother and father, siblings John (Tink), Paul (Bud), Richard (Dick), Alma, and his three loyal German shepherds, Deputy 1,2, and 3. He has left behind his niece Dawn Englehardt, his nephew Richard Englehardt, his wife Claudia and their sons Matthew Englehardt and wife Lauren Englehardt, and Anthony Englehardt. Also, there are several nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, and sincere friends that will miss him dearly.
Edwin joined the U.S Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War, in South Korea, and continued to serve his country until 1956. In 1955 he was president of Neil Grand Hardware Inc. Edwin was a born leader and started his political career in 1963 as ABC commissioner of Paterson. In 1965 he became Paterson Police commissioner until 1971. In 1989, Edwin was on the board of directors for AAA. For six years from 1970, he served as chairmen to local BD #37 N.J Selective Service System. In 1974 -2001 he served as Sheriff of Passaic County. Sheriff Englehardt was a leader, and mentor to many officers even after his retirement in 2001.
Everyone who was close to Sheriff Englehardt, knew of his loyalty, patriotism, and generous nature. The immediate family would like to thank the first responders, doctors, and nurses at St. Joseph's Hospital for their compassionate care, during his short stay. They would also like to thank all his close friends and law enforcement for their support and prayers prior to his passing.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 10:00-10:30 AM at St. John's Cathedral, 381 Grand St., Paterson NJ with funeral mass to begin at 10:30 AM at the Cathedral. Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa. Arrangements are by Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd., Totowa. (Do not delete this line. It does not print.
