Dear Pontezone family, I remember going into the store for all my cards, for candy and gifts, because they were so beautiful, but I used to see your Dad in the back, sometimes he would come out to help me, but when walking into the store, it was walking into home, because that's what you were made to feel like, family. It is so clear what he means to you, your family and all. May God bless all of you to help you through this and celebrate a beautiful life. Prayers, love and hugs.

One of the best things growing up in a small town like Totowa Boro is that you either get to know everyone personally or know someone who knows someone. One of those names who everyone knew is Gary Potenzone. "Big Gary" as people referred to him was always known for his laugh, smile, and caring ways. You could always find him working at his store Apollo Cards and Gifts. I am not sure how he ever got any work done because everyday people would stop in his store to say hello and he was always make time to make conversation. Since moving away from my hometown, I miss those days but always made a trip to the store for a chocolate covered Oreo and strawberry while visiting and to stop in to talk to him. I can still see him in his navy blue or maroon polo Apollo shirts with the logo of the man landing on the moon and the stars in the bubble letters. I know he touched many peoples' lives and I'll always remember him dearly. Everyday we should strive to make other's lives happier no matter who they are. Gary did that for his customers, friends, and family. It may seem unfair that we only had him for a short time in this world, but it makes you appreciate the moments you did share and value the current time we all have here a little more. Rest in peace Big Gary and know many loved you and will miss you. Be strong and lean on your friends and family Deborah OConnor Potenzone, Dina, Kimberly Potenzone Aliano, Gary Potenzone Jr, and Kristin Noel Tomasello. We love you all!

The Measure of a Man
What is the measure of a man
So much more than himself, I find
A man can’t be measured all alone
But by those he leaves behind
Show me a trail of kindness
Of love and of character
Friends and family that he leaves
Are a legacy that will endure
Some build sky scrapers to the clouds
Others conquer the mountains and seas
But all of their efforts are folly unless
They won the hearts of their families
The words that we chisel in granite
Are a poor substitute, at best
Show me the lives of the folks he loved
Of the ones who lay him to rest
As we say goodby to any man
The best of him lives with us yet
They are the measure of his life
And one we shall never forget

Words can not express the sadness I felt upon learning of Gary's passing. My heart hurts for Debbie Dina Kim Gary and Kristin. I feel like I have known Gary my entire life - I was about 7 or 8 when I first met him when my Mom worked at vitalife which at that time was right next door to Apollo when it was adjacent to Channel Lumber. I would go in and Gary would give my brother and I candy - we felt like we were so special and important because we could enter the store from the back entrance - there was a long hallway behind Apollo and Vitalife where the employee bathrooms were and where deliveries came in so as kids my brother and I were always roaming around back there. As I got older Gary and Albert hired me for my first job at Apollo. It was there that I got to know the entire Potenzone family even better. My Mom always spoke so very highly of Debbie and Gary and I am so very certain she and Gary are exchanging big hugs and smiles and laughter over old memories along with Mildred and Sam Vigorito. The world lost a very good man on Jan 7th but more importantly the Potenzone family lost a Husband Dad Grandfather Brother and no matter how you arrange the 26 letters of our alphabet there are no words that can take that pain away - the best I can do is say I am here for any of you - I care - I understand - and I will always remember him.
