Robert David Delaney - Badge # 978, 85, of Toms River , New Jersey, passed away on Dec. 3, 2011 at Care One Service Center, Wall, NJ. Mr. Delaney was born and raised in Paterson before moving to Toms River in 1995. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and was awarded the Distinguished Medal of Service, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Service Medal, American Campaign Service Medal and the WW II Victory medal. After his military service he enlisted in the New Jersey State Police. He graduated with the 38th Class in June of 1951 from the State Police Academy. During his State Police career, he served in various positions including Troop B and later Troop E Commander, and in Division Headquarters West Trenton until his retirement from the NJ State Police as Captain in 1980. Captain Delaney then became Director of Security for Mid-Atlantic Bank before becoming Director of Banking Security for Security Operations Systems, a post he held until 1989. Captain Delaney was a member of the Fraternal Order of Retired Troopers. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great grand-kids during his retirement days. Captain Delaney was predeceased by his mother and father, Ann and John A. Delaney and brothers, Jack and Bill Delaney. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary (Hamill) Delaney and devoted daughter Kathleen Delaney of Brick, and her children Mark Delaney and his wife, Jen and their children Jack and Kaelyn, Kathleen's daughter Siobhan and son, Taylor. He is also survived by his son Robert J. Delaney #2853 (a former Jersey Trooper, 88th Class) and his wife Billie. Granddaughters Shannon Henderson and her husband Ryan and their children Austin and Landon, and granddaughter Danielle Madigan, her husband Mike and children Michael and Karli. He is survived by his sister Eileen Toomey and his many nieces and nephews. His family remembers their husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and great uncle as "a kind, generous man who loved his family, the State Police and his country". Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd, Totowa, on Saturday at 8:45 AM. Funeral Mass to follow at Our Lady of The Valley R.C. Church, Wayne at 9:30 AM. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa. Friends may call Friday 6:00 - 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Former Troopers Association Widows & Orphans Fund, FTA Office, 1675 White Horse-Mercerville Road, Suite 103, Hamilton Twp, NJ 08619 would be appreciated.
