I have so many wonderful memories of Aunt Mimi, my only regret is that I couldn't get up there in time to see her before she passed. I adored Aunt Mimi. As my sister said, from my first memory of Aunt Mimi, I remember just staring at her beautiful skin and hair, she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever laid my eyes on. And on top of that, she was MY Aunt (!), well that made me feel like I was the most special little girl in the world. I adored her more than words can say, as I grew up I tried to be like her, I studied the way she did her makeup, even colored my hair black, who wouldn't want to look like the most beautiful woman in the world? I'm told I got my nickname "Shoehorn" from all the times I'd sneak into her closet to try on her shoes and try to take some home as mementos. I must have been 4 or so and it was completely innocent, I just wanted to be as close to her and as much like her!! When I'd be at Aunt Mimi's house just the two of us, she'd teach me how to type and I became so proud of the fact that I could type faster and extremely accurate compared to others my age who were still working on their penmanship. She touched every part of my life, I was able to get wonderful jobs through the years and I owe a huge part to Aunt Mimi for taking the time to teach me how to be professional, properly prepare documents, she brought me to her office quite a few times when I was young and I was just so proud to be "Mary's Niece" !
Aunt Mimi was such a rare and unique person in this world. I've NEVER heard Aunt Mimi say a bad word about anyone! She always had something, if not many good things to say about whomever. She was so funny in her own little ditzy way!! Not too far back, my sister Donna and I were playing cards with her and Uncle Leo and I don't recall the logistics of it, but you were supposed to yell out a particular word if you won, well Aunt Mimi thought she won so she screamed out this word that had absolutely nothing to do with the game, in fact it wasn't even a word, and we all were screaming laughing. She couldn't understand why we were laughing! That was my dear Aunt Mimi and the apple of my eye. One more thing I must mention, I've hit hard times now and then and Aunt Mimi would have it no other way than to help me out with whatever it was I was struggling with, be it rent, my car, dentist appt, she is a true saint in my eyes. I know she's going to be right by Uncle Leo's side and I sense that Aunt Mimi is going to be watching over me as well, my guardian angel.
And probably the most important thing I need to say is that There is no greater love story than that of my Aunt Mimi and Uncle Leo!! Uncle Leo loved Aunt Mimi more and more with each passing day from the day he met her! I loved being at their home because it was filled with such comfort and love. And though she's gone, I do believe that a love like theirs transcends time. She hasn't left us, she's watching us from above and trying to guide us so that we too shall make it up to heaven with her, of course she's got to take a little time for herself, I just know there's a golden Bingo Hall that's been waiting for her to get there so they can start the next game.
I LOVE YOU FOREVER AUNT MIMI, YOUR ADORING NIECE SHOEHORN AKA LORI

Some of my absolute best memories were spent at Aunt Mimi's and Uncle Leo's house. From making Jiffy Pop and having sleep-over "parties", watching the Sonny and Cher Show, sitting on the Buddha's lap, and going through Aunt Mimi's shoe closet and "searching" for the pretty smelling soaps she kept in them. I remember always thinking she looked like and dressed like a movie star!
As I got older and had children of my own, I enjoyed watching the smiles on both my Aunt's and Uncle's faces when they were around them. It was so beautiful to be able to share those memories with my children and two of the most cherished people in my life.

It was fitting that my inspiration to write this --- came around 2:00 this morning…which is just about the time Aunt Mimi would be in the middle of a good hand, at one of her infamous card games. God Bless her.
Where can one begin? With her, always, radiant smile… or maybe her laughter, no one can ever forget Aunt Mimi’s laughter?
Well, her love of life consisted of living with a few simple principles:
Her love of family, her love of friends and her love of fun.
Aunt Mimi’s commitment to her family was passionate and real. She always put her family first…no matter what…she was always there for us. She was a confidant, a mentor – the giver. We have all been touched by her care. Especially, Uncle Leo, Uncle Pat and Aunt Carm. Amen to you Aunt Mimi.
And her friends were an extension of her family. In a nutshell: she was always there for us, because she loved being there for us.
Her principle for loving fun…well now…just a few memories:
The parties in Aunt Mimi’s basement, the card games EVERYWHERE - especially by Aunt Marge’s and Cooey’s. Oh, and down the shore with skilo AND the cheemachas – and if you don’t know what chimajas are…don’t ask!
AND all the dancing – especially when Uncle Leo and Aunt Mimi would tear up the carpet – such good times.
Her care and laughter with us, “the kids and our babies were her babies, too.
How about Aunt Mimi-isms:
The Italian Circle crew, right Uncle Leo, with Peggy and Phil and the gang?
Of course those runnin’ feet to Atlantic City – Chaching!!! - with her girls and, of course, Uncle Leo.
Keno hmmm… Hey what went on in Paterson, STAYED in Paterson.
Bingo, anyone??? Even their wonderful family dog…was named Bingo.
From placing those chips down, so many years ago at the Plaza bingo hall, to memorizing the sheets at the halls in Clifton, Totowa, Wayne, Etc. Etc. Etc. – she loved her bingo.
Let us not forget her Bingo Pizza or some of her other comfort foods! No, Uncle Leo not those veggies you joyfully prepared for her – well she did love your eggplant --- but the others: Bromilow’s chocolate covered jellies, your lasagna, subway sandwiches and let’s not forget the spiced ham!!!
She was a real beauty, a class act, a lady: Her Zingadas, well as Donna stated the other night…when you think of today’s bling – well her ‘zing’ came first – her jewelry, and the clothes, and the shoes – for those runnin feet. All those shoes. Right, Shoe Buggy;)
Yes, Aunt Mimi’s commitment to the love of family, and friends and fun…especially you, Uncle Leo. You were her rock, her partner… HER MAN She has touched so many of us.
And her smile…that radiant smile. And her laughter, no one can ever forget her laughter. The memories and her spirit.
How can one speak of just one memory, when there are so many memories for us all to share? So Aunt Mimi, be sure to smile upon us, and inspire us to live by your principles and your laughter along the way…for your presence and your love will ALWAYS be with us.
